Aşure(Ashure) Day

Aşure Day is the tenth day of the month of Muharem, the first month according to Islamic calendar.

Sunni Islam commemorate the parting of the Red Sea for Moses and his followers to escape.

Shia Muslims remember the death of the grandson of Muhammad, Husayn ibn Ali.

In Turkey a pudding made of beans, rice, chick peas, dried apricots, figs, raisins, walnuts, sugar and pomegranate seeds is made on Aşure Day. This basic recipe varies from region to region and even family to family

The pudding is also known as Noah’s Pudding remembering when Noah gather all the remaining food on the ark. Cooking it all together and able to fed everyone on the ark.

It is then shared with family, friends and neighbours.

This centuries old tradition is a symbol of sharing, solidarity, love, wealth and a symbol of our life together.
